The Alta Murgia Plateau

The camera surveys the high Alta Murgia, a vast limestone tableland that rises across central Apulia. This karst landscape of gentle ridges, dry-stone walls and shallow sinkholes is one of the most extensive pseudo-steppe environments in the Mediterranean.

Olive Groves and Rural Heritage

In the foreground, orderly rows of centuries-old olive trees testify to a farming tradition that has shaped the region for generations. The surrounding agricultural mosaic blends groves, pasture and patches of native holm oak woodland.

The Alta Murgia National Park

The plateau forms part of the Parco Nazionale dell'Alta Murgia, a protected area renowned for its biodiversity, grassland birds and rare orchids. Scattered telecommunication masts on the skyline mark the highest points of this open terrain.

The View from Cassano delle Murge

Perched at the southern gateway to the park, Cassano delle Murge offers sweeping vistas across the rugged interior of the Bari hinterland, where the horizon stretches uninterrupted toward the distant uplands.
