An Active Stratovolcano in Bicol
Bulusan Volcano is an active stratovolcano located at the southeastern end of the Philippine island of Luzon, in Sorsogon Province. Rising to roughly 1,565 metres, it is one of the most active volcanoes in the country and is continuously monitored by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
Geology and Volcanic Activity
The volcano sits within a large ancient caldera and features several craters and flank vents. Its eruptions are typically phreatic — steam-driven explosions that produce ash plumes — rather than large effusive lava flows. Periods of unrest bring steaming, minor ashfall, and occasional small explosions that draw close attention from authorities and nearby communities.
Bulusan Volcano Natural Park
The cone is the centrepiece of Bulusan Volcano Natural Park, a protected area cloaked in dense tropical rainforest. The lush green slopes shelter rich biodiversity and frame the serene crater lake of Lake Bulusan at the volcano's base, a popular destination for visitors to the region.
Landscape and Setting
From the camera's vantage point in Sorsogon, the volcano dominates the surrounding lowlands of the Bicol Region. The forested ridges and changing cloud cover over the summit make this a striking natural landmark and a valuable visual record of an active Philippine volcano.
