A Sanctuary Flight Pen

This camera looks down onto a spacious mesh-roofed flight pen at the Ventana Wildlife Society's Condor Sanctuary, where captive-bred and rehabilitating California Condors are conditioned for life in the wild before release. The pen's open lattice lets condors stretch their nearly ten-foot wingspan while staying safe from the surrounding wilderness.

North America's largest flying bird nearly vanished in the twentieth century, and the sanctuary's ongoing captive-release program remains central to the species' recovery along the central California coast. Staff use feeds like this one to monitor bird health, social behavior, and readiness for eventual release.

A Rugged Big Sur Backdrop

Beyond the enclosure, the camera frames a steep, densely forested hillside blanketed in redwood, pine, and chaparral scrub, part of the vast Los Padres National Forest that surrounds the sanctuary. The remote, rugged terrain typifies the wild stretch of coastline the condors call home.
