The Court Avenue District

The Court Avenue District is the entertainment and dining hub of downtown Des Moines, a compact grid of restored brick storefronts that runs from the Des Moines River toward the county courthouse. The camera looks out over one of its signature street crossings, where pedestrians, cyclists and traffic share the historic core.

What the Camera Shows

The lens frames a wide street intersection paved in patterned brick and asphalt, lined with decorative street lamps, planters and the facades of low-rise commercial blocks. Vehicles ease through the junction while the walkable sidewalks reveal the comings and goings of one of Iowa's liveliest urban quarters.

History & Architecture

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the district preserves late-19th and early-20th-century commercial architecture — pressed-brick warehouses and storefronts later reborn as bars, restaurants and lofts. The Polk County Courthouse anchors the avenue and gives the street its name.

A business, dining and entertainment destination, Court Avenue sits within walking distance of the riverfront trails, the Civic Center and the wider downtown loop. The camera offers a continuous street-level vantage on this pedestrian-friendly stretch of the Iowa capital.
