A Storied Kyoto Temple

Eikandō Zenrin-ji is one of the great Jōdo-shū Buddhist temples of eastern Kyoto, founded in the ninth century and famed across Japan for its sprawling grounds threaded with covered walkways.

The Approach and Gate

This camera frames the temple’s street-level entrance, where a timber gate, stone lantern posts and a narrow paved lane lead visitors toward the main hall. Layered eaves and dense tree cover give the approach a hushed, contemplative character.
