The town of Gothic began life as an 1879 silver-mining boom camp before being reborn as the seasonal home of the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL), one of the oldest field research stations in the United States. Scientists have studied the surrounding alpine ecosystem here since 1928, making this small settlement a living laboratory tucked into the high Elk Mountains.

Gothic Mountain's Dark Rock Wall

Dominating the skyline is Gothic Mountain, a striking dark-rock summit whose sheer cliffs rise above dense stands of subalpine fir and spruce. The peak's distinctive jagged profile has made it a local landmark for miners, researchers, and mountaineers exploring the Gunnison National Forest for well over a century.

A Legendary Snowpack Record

This webcam watches over the same slopes where longtime local resident billy barr has hand-recorded daily snow depth and weather data for decades, producing one of the longest continuous citizen-science snowpack records in North America — data now referenced by climate researchers studying the changing Rockies.

High-Elevation Wilderness Access

Sitting at roughly 2,900 meters above sea level, Gothic serves as a gateway to some of Colorado's most pristine alpine terrain, with hiking routes fanning out toward wildflower-strewn meadows, glacial valleys, and the surrounding peaks of the Elk Mountain range.
