Grand Square & White Tower

Velké Náměstí, the City's Grand Square

Hradec Králové's Grand Square is the ceremonial and historic heart of the city, a broad cobbled plaza that has anchored civic life here for centuries. This camera frames the square from the corner near the U Špuláků house, giving a wide panoramic view across the plaza toward its cluster of landmark towers.

The Cathedral of the Holy Spirit

Dominating the skyline is the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit (Katedrála Svatého Ducha), a towering Gothic brick church begun in the 14th century. Its twin spires and steep roofline make it one of the most recognizable silhouettes in East Bohemia, visible from almost every corner of the square.

The White Tower Belfry

Standing apart from the cathedral is the White Tower (Bílá věž), a free-standing Renaissance belfry built to house the city's great bells. Its pale stone facade and distinctive form make it an iconic counterpoint to the cathedral's Gothic bulk, and together the two towers form the square's signature skyline.

The Old Town Hall and City Life

Facing the towers across the square stands the Old Town Hall, its stately arcaded facade lined with shops and cafés. Cars park along the square's edges and pedestrians cross the open plaza throughout the day, giving this historic setting a constant thread of everyday Bohemian city life.
