A Sweeping View of Heron Marsh
The camera is mounted on the observation deck of the Visitor Interpretive Center (VIC), looking out across Heron Marsh. Open water channels, floating bogs and sedge meadows stretch toward a horizon of low Adirondack hills, with tall white pines and spruce framing the foreground.
Inside the Adirondack Park
Paul Smiths lies within the Adirondack Park, the largest protected area in the contiguous United States. This six-million-acre mosaic of forest preserve, lakes and wetlands surrounds the marsh, giving the view its remote, wild northern character.
A Haven for Wildlife
Heron Marsh is renowned among birders: great blue herons, ospreys, ducks and red-winged blackbirds work the reeds, while beavers and muskrats shape the wetland habitat. The boreal setting also draws species rarely seen farther south.
The Visitor Interpretive Center
The VIC is an environmental education and research hub run by Paul Smith's College, with miles of boardwalks and trails winding through the marsh and forest. This feed offers a permanent window onto one of the Adirondacks' most celebrated wetland landscapes.
