The Landing Zone

This close-up camera is trained on the small wooden landing board just outside a working honey bee hive in Buchloe, Germany. Every returning forager must touch down here before squeezing through the entrance, making the board one of the highest-traffic points in the entire colony.

Reading the Traffic

Watch for bees arriving with heavy pollen baskets packed onto their hind legs — a sure sign of a productive foraging trip through the Bavarian countryside. Guard bees can often be seen inspecting each new arrival before granting passage inside.
