A Pass Named for Ten Provinces
Jukkoku Pass, literally the "Pass of Ten Countries," sits on the boundary ridge between the Izu Peninsula and the Hakone highlands in Kannami, Shizuoka. Local legend holds that from its 774-meter summit a viewer could once pick out ten of old Japan's historical provinces spread across the horizon.
Panorama Terrace 1059
The modern lookout, branded PANORAMA TERRACE 1059 for its elevation in meters, is reached by the Jukkoku Cable Car and ringed by an open 360-degree observation deck plus the adjoining Tengoku Café. Benches and walkways trace the rim so every direction of the panorama stays in view.
Mount Fuji Across the Bay
To the northwest, the silhouette of Mount Fuji rises beyond the waters of Sagami Bay, while the terraced hills of the Izu Peninsula unfold toward the Pacific coast below. On the clearest stretches, the outline of the Hakone caldera and its crater lake complete the circle of peaks.
A Ridge Shared by Two Regions
Jukkoku Pass straddles the old boundary between Atami and Hakone, and the terrace is jointly promoted by tourism operators on both sides of the ridge. The Jukkoku Cable company that runs the terrace also operates a sister lookout facing Suruga Bay a short ride away.
