Kīlauea is a shield volcano on the southeastern flank of the Big Island of Hawaii and ranks among the most active volcanoes on the planet. Rising to roughly 1,250 meters within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, its summit lies in the Halemaʻumaʻu crater, where eruptions are monitored continuously by the United States Geological Survey.

The Lava Channel Across the Crater Floor

This camera tracks a lava channel on the floor of the summit caldera, where molten rock erupts from a vent and runs as an incandescent river across the freshly hardened crater floor. As the channel advances it builds levees of cooling basalt along its banks, while the brightest orange marks the hottest, fastest-moving flow at its center.
