A Historic Approach to Kiyomizu-dera

Kiyomizu-zaka is one of the principal approach streets to Kiyomizu-dera, a UNESCO World Heritage temple perched on the wooded hillside above. For over a thousand years pilgrims have climbed this stone-paved slope on their way to the temple's famous wooden terrace, and the street itself has grown into a living showcase of Kyoto's traditional streetscape.

Traditional Shopfronts and Machiya Architecture

The lane is lined with machiya townhouses — low wooden buildings with latticed windows, sliding doors, and hanging paper lanterns — many of them generations-old shops selling Kiyomizu-yaki pottery, pickles, sweets, and souvenirs. The architecture and shop signage preserve the atmosphere of old Higashiyama almost unchanged.
