A Landmark Rewilding Project

The Knepp Estate in West Sussex is one of the most celebrated rewilding projects in Europe, where former farmland has been returned to a mosaic of scrub, wood pasture and wetland roamed by free-ranging cattle, ponies and deer. It was here that White Storks — extinct as a breeding species in Britain for centuries — were reintroduced, and this towering nest is one of the project's flagship success stories.

Life in the Nest

Built from a mass of interwoven branches high in the fork of an ancient oak, the nest is tended by a bonded pair identifiable by their coloured leg rings. Viewers can watch the adults exchange incubation duties, rearrange nesting material and feed their chicks, offering a rare close-up on the breeding behaviour of one of Europe's most charismatic large birds.

A Wilder Sussex Landscape

Beyond the nest, the camera's wider view takes in the rewilded parkland of the estate — open grassland, scrubby thickets and hedgerows that have transformed a once-conventional farm into a haven for biodiversity. The return of the White Stork to this landscape is held up as a model for how large-scale habitat restoration can bring back species once lost from the British countryside.
