About This Webcam
Everything you need to know about this live stream
Kororā, the World's Smallest Penguin
The kororā (Eudyptula minor), also known as the little blue penguin, is the smallest penguin species on Earth. This nest box camera follows a single breeding pair through the daily rhythms of incubation and chick-rearing inside a dark, sheltered burrow.
The Kororā Kōrero Monitoring Project
The feed is part of Kororā Kōrero, a community science project run in partnership with Ngāti Te Whiti and Ngāti Mutunga that tracks the movements, roosting habits and breeding patterns of the Taranaki coast's kororā population. Birds in the colony are individually microchipped so volunteers can follow known pairs season after season.
A Colony Near Port Taranaki
The nest boxes sit within a managed colony close to Port Taranaki, on the North Island's west coast, where predator control gives the birds a safer place to come ashore and raise their young away from the open water.
A Community Conservation Effort
The camera is supported by the Ngā Motu Marine Society alongside local partners including Taranaki Mounga, giving viewers worldwide a rare window into the private life of one of New Zealand's most elusive native seabirds.
