Kusatsu Onsen, a Storied Spa Town

Kusatsu Onsen ranks among the most famous hot-spring resorts in Japan, prized for the exceptional volume and acidity of its waters. The Jizo-no-yu bathhouse on the left is one of several free public baths that have welcomed travellers for centuries.

What the Camera Shows

A steep stone staircase climbs toward the Jizo-do hall, flanked by traditional stone lanterns and timber-fronted buildings. Steam rises from the cobbled plaza as guests in yukata robes move between the baths and nearby inns.

Planning a Visit

Set in the mountains of Gunma, Kusatsu is reached by bus and rail from Tokyo and rewards visitors with a compact, walkable onsen quarter. The Jizo area offers a quieter counterpoint to the famous Yubatake hot-water field a few minutes away.
