A Reservoir Born from the Elorn

Filled in September 1981, Lac du Drennec is an artificial reservoir formed by damming the Elorn river between the villages of Commana and Sizun. Covering roughly one square kilometer with a maximum depth of about twenty meters, it now serves as the principal water reserve for northern Finistère, its clear banks and gently sloping shoreline giving the impression of a natural mountain lake.

A Playground for Water Sports

The reservoir's steady winds, sheltered bay, and absence of ocean swell make it a prized training ground for sailing, windsurfing, and canoe-kayak clubs from across Brittany. Regulated nautical activities keep the water clear for beginners and competitive crews alike, and small craft and buoyed swim zones are a common sight along the shore.

Guarding Water Quality

Because Lac du Drennec supplies drinking water to the surrounding region, its ecological balance is closely monitored under a dedicated prefectoral order. The surrounding hills, cloaked in dense woodland, help filter runoff before it reaches the reservoir, preserving the pristine character of the water and its shoreline habitats.

A Destination for Anglers and Walkers

Beyond its nautical clubs, the lake attracts anglers managed by the local fishing association, along with walkers who follow the shoreline paths that trace its irregular, wooded perimeter. The combination of open water, forested banks, and rolling countryside makes Lac du Drennec one of inland Finistère's most cherished natural landmarks.
