A Monument at the City's Crossroads

At the center of the square stands the McKinley Monument, a granite obelisk raised in memory of President William McKinley, who was assassinated in Buffalo in 1901. Wide avenues radiate outward from its base, making the square one of the city's principal civic crossroads and a natural gathering point for downtown traffic and pedestrians alike.

Buffalo City Hall's Art Deco Skyline

On the western edge, the Buffalo City Hall tower rises in tiered Art Deco setbacks, its commanding silhouette one of the most recognizable in Western New York. The building has anchored municipal government here since the early twentieth century and remains a defining feature of the downtown skyline.

The Old Erie County Hall

Opposite City Hall, the Old Erie County Hall contributes a very different architectural note: its Gothic Revival clock tower and stone facade recall an earlier era of civic building. Together the two structures frame the square with a striking contrast of architectural styles spanning more than a century.

A Working Civic Square

Buses and cars continue to circle the monument throughout the day, threading between rows of mature street trees that soften the square's formal geometry.
