A canopy built for great apes

This enclosure recreates the arboreal world of the orangutan with a web of ropes, wooden beams, and platforms strung high among the trees. The structure lets the apes move the way they would through a rainforest canopy, climbing, swinging, and resting at height rather than staying on open ground.

Orangutans: the thinkers of the treetops

Orangutans are among the most intelligent primates on Earth, known for using tools, building fresh sleeping nests each day, and their notably deliberate, unhurried movements. Native to the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra, they spend the vast majority of their lives in the trees.

Part of a historic city zoo

The enclosure sits within the Budapest Zoo & Botanical Garden, one of the oldest zoological institutions in the world, set inside the city's large public park. Its Art Nouveau pavilions and landscaped grounds have made it a landmark attraction for well over a century.

A live window onto ape behavior

The camera offers a continuous view of the habitat, an easy way to catch the orangutans foraging, climbing, or simply lounging on one of the raised wooden platforms that dot the enclosure.
