The Neva and the Palace Bridge

The Palace Bridge (Dvortsovy Most) is one of the most celebrated drawbridges in the city, linking the historic centre with Vasilyevsky Island across the broad waters of the Neva River. Its graceful bascule spans and the constant flow of river traffic make it a defining image of the imperial capital.

Landmarks on the far bank

Across the river stands the distinctive blue-and-white Kunstkamera, Russia's first museum, alongside the buildings of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Further along, the unmistakable golden spire of the Peter and Paul Cathedral rises above the fortress walls on Zayachy Island.

The Palace Embankment

In the foreground the granite Palace Embankment sweeps along the shoreline, leading toward the Winter Palace and the State Hermitage Museum. This elegant waterfront is among the most photographed promenades in Saint Petersburg.
