The Falcons of the Lange Jan

The camera is trained on a breeding pair of peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus) that have claimed a nesting ledge on the tower. Capable of diving at over 300 km/h, the peregrine is the fastest animal on Earth, and this vantage offers a remarkably close look at the raptors as they preen, rest and survey the city for prey.

A Tower Above Amersfoort

The Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren, affectionately called the Lange Jan ('Tall John'), is a late-Gothic bell tower rising more than 98 metres over the city. One of the tallest medieval towers in the country, it has anchored the skyline of Amersfoort for over five centuries and marks the exact geographic centre of the Netherlands.

Below the falcons spreads the compact medieval heart of Amersfoort — a dense weave of red-tiled rooftops, stepped gables, hidden courtyards and the canals and ramparts that ring the old town.
