Pike's Beach Boardwalk

A South Fork beach access point

Pike's Beach sits along Dune Road in Westhampton, one of the barrier-beach access points that line the ocean side of Long Island's South Fork. The camera looks down a raised wooden boardwalk that crosses the dune line, a common design along this coast that protects fragile dune vegetation from foot traffic.

Dunes and sand fencing

Rows of sand fencing and wind-sculpted dune grass flank the walkway on both sides, part of the ongoing effort to hold the barrier beach together against Atlantic swells and storms. A small lifeguard or watch tower stands near the end of the boardwalk where the sand opens onto the beach.

Hamptons beach culture

Westhampton is one of the easternmost of the Hamptons villages, and its ocean beaches like Pike's Beach draw both local residents and summer visitors to Long Island's South Shore. The view offers a real-time look at conditions on this stretch of the Atlantic coast, from calm sunlit sand to the wind and surf of passing weather systems.
