Popocatépetl Volcano from Altzomoni
OnlinePerched at nearly 4,200 meters on the saddle between Mexico's two great volcanoes, this CENAPRED-monitored view from Cerro Altzomoni frames the Popocatépetl cone head-on, its restless summit often trailing a thin plume of gas and ash. The camera anchors the Izta-Popo Zoquiapan National Park's monitoring network, keeping watch over one of North America's most persistently active volcanoes from a genuine high-altitude observatory.

A Front-Row Seat on an Active Volcano
From the saddle of Cerro Altzomoni, this camera looks directly across the Paso de Cortés at Popocatépetl, one of North America's most persistently active volcanoes. Nicknamed "Don Goyo" by locals, the cone has shown continuous fumarolic activity for decades, and the feed regularly captures its characteristic plume drifting away from the crater.
A CENAPRED Monitoring Post
The feed is sponsored by CENAPRED, Mexico's national disaster-prevention agency, which uses the Altzomoni vantage point as part of its permanent volcanic surveillance network. The station sits beside a cluster of communications towers and an atmospheric observatory, making it one of the highest continuously staffed monitoring posts in central Mexico.
Izta-Popo Zoquiapan National Park
Altzomoni rises within the Izta-Popo Zoquiapan National Park, the protected highland corridor linking Popocatépetl with its neighbor Iztaccíhuatl. The surrounding slopes are a popular staging point for hikers heading to the Paso de Cortés and the base camps of both volcanoes.
