The Strongest Tidal Current in the World

This camera overlooks the Saltstraumen, a narrow strait where up to 400 million cubic metres of seawater force their way through a channel barely 150 metres wide. The result is a spectacular display of whirlpools reaching several metres across, a phenomenon driven by the tidal exchange between the Skjerstad Fjord and the open sea.

The Saltstraumen Bridge

Spanning the current is the Saltstraumen Bridge, a graceful cantilever structure whose concrete piers rise directly from the surging water. The bridge is a defining landmark of the area, carrying the coastal road across one of Norway's most dramatic stretches of sea.

A Maritime Hotspot in Nordland

Located near Bodø in Nordland, Saltstraumen is a renowned destination for sea fishing, diving and wildlife watching, thanks to the rich nutrients stirred up by the relentless flow. The feed is operated by the Norwegian Coastal Administration to support safe navigation.

Wild Arctic Scenery

Set well above the Arctic Circle, the strait is surrounded by rugged rocky islets and low green shorelines. The cam captures the ever-shifting interplay of tide, current and light that makes this corner of northern Norway so captivating to watch.
