Sangay Volcano — One of Earth's Most Active

Sangay is a stratovolcano in the Ecuadorian Andes that has been in near-continuous eruption for centuries, making it one of the most persistently active volcanoes on the planet. Rising to 5,230 m (17,159 ft), its snow-capped summit dominates the eastern Andean skyline.

Sangay National Park and Amazon Transition Zone

The volcano sits within Sangay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that spans the transition from Andean highlands to the Amazon basin. The dense tropical and cloud-forest canopy visible from this vantage point is part of one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth.

Geology and Volcanic Activity

Sangay produces frequent lava flows, pyroclastic emissions, and ash columns. Its position on the Andean volcanic arc — formed by the subduction of the Nazca Plate — drives ongoing magmatic activity. The volcano's eastern flanks drain into the Amazon watershed.

Biodiversity and Conservation

Sangay National Park protects a remarkable range of habitats across altitudinal zones, from Andean páramo to Amazonian lowland forest. The park shelters endangered species including the giant otter, jaguar, and Andean tapir amid virtually untouched wilderness.
