Santiaguito: The Perpetual Eruption

Santiaguito is a complex of four lava domes that grew on the western flank of Santa María volcano following the catastrophic 1902 Plinian eruption. Active since 1922, it is one of the longest-running eruptions on Earth, producing near-continuous low-level explosions, lava flows, and ash columns that can rise several kilometers.

Geology and Volcanic Structure

Santa María rises to 3,772 m (12,375 ft) above sea level in the western highlands of Guatemala. The Santiaguito dome complex sits approximately 1,600 m below the main summit, on the volcano's steep southwestern face. The El Caliente vent is persistently the most active of the four domes, regularly generating pyroclastic density currents and block-lava flows toward the surrounding valleys.

San Marcos Vantage Point

This camera is positioned on the San Marcos side of the volcano, offering a direct westward view of the Santiaguito dome and the Santa María cone above. The vantage reveals the full profile of the pyroclastic plumes and glowing rockfalls characteristic of Caliente's activity, set against the lush green lower slopes and surrounding highland terrain.

Volcanic Hazards and Monitoring

Santiaguito is closely monitored by Guatemala's INSIVUMEH (Instituto Nacional de Sismología, Vulcanología, Meteorología e Hidrología). The volcano poses ongoing hazards including lahars during the rainy season, ashfall on nearby communities, and periodic larger explosive episodes. Webcam feeds like this one serve both scientific monitoring and public awareness of volcanic activity in real time.
