Inside a Screech Owl Roost Box

This camera looks straight into the interior chamber of Owl Box 1, one of nine identical boxes mounted across a rural property near Murrysville. A layer of wood shavings lines the floor, giving Eastern Screech Owls a snug, predator-resistant space to roost and eventually nest.

Part of a Long-Running Research Project

Owl Box 1 is one node in a multi-box monitoring network that follows the same population of screech owls through the full annual cycle, from cold-season roosting through spring pair formation and the raising of young. A companion pan-tilt-zoom camera elsewhere on the property covers the surrounding woodland where the owls forage between boxes.

A Window Into Cavity-Nesting Behavior

Nest boxes like this one give cavity-nesting owls a safe alternative to natural tree hollows, which are increasingly scarce in managed landscapes. The stationary interior angle makes it possible to observe roosting, prey caching, and courtship behavior at close range, day after day.
