This fixed camera looks directly into Owl Box 2, a wooden cavity mounted on a rural property in southwestern Pennsylvania and lined with a soft bed of straw and wood shavings. An infrared sensor keeps the enclosed interior visible around the clock without disturbing its occupants.

Part of a Long-Running Research Project

The box is one of nine screech owl boxes spread across a ten-acre stretch of woodland, all part of an ongoing study into the roosting and breeding habits of Eastern screech owls. Researchers use the feed to observe behavior with minimal human interference.

What to Watch For

Depending on the time of year, viewers may spot an owl roosting quietly among the straw, caching prey for later, or — as the boxes move toward spring — the beginnings of nesting and courtship activity inside the cavity.
