A Window Into a Screech Owl's World

This camera sits fixed inside one of several nest boxes on a private research property in rural southwestern Pennsylvania, part of a long-running study of the Eastern screech owl. An infrared sensor keeps the box interior visible around the clock without disturbing its occupant.

Roosting and Nesting Behavior

Screech owls use these enclosed boxes for daytime roosting and for caching prey, and later for raising a brood once nesting activity gets underway. The tight, cavity-like framing of the shot mirrors exactly what the owl itself experiences inside the box.

Part of a Wider Conservation Project

The box is one of several such installations spread across a ten-acre stretch of land, each wired with its own live camera to support ongoing observation of the species' habits without any physical intrusion.
