About This Webcam
Everything you need to know about this live stream
Java's Highest and Most Active Volcano
Mount Semeru, whose summit is known as Mahameru ("the Great Mountain"), rises to 3,676 metres, making it the tallest peak on the island of Java and one of the highest in Indonesia. It is a classic stratovolcano, built up over millennia from alternating layers of lava and pyroclastic material that give it its steep, symmetrical profile.
This live camera frames the summit cone in close telephoto, isolating the rugged crater area where the volcano's activity is concentrated and where ash columns repeatedly break the skyline.
A Near-Continuous Eruptive Rhythm
Semeru is famous for its remarkably regular activity, producing small explosive eruptions and ash puffs at intervals that can be as short as tens of minutes. These bursts send grey ash plumes hundreds of metres into the air from the active Jonggring-Seloko crater on the volcano's southeastern flank.
The summit view is the ideal vantage point to witness this rhythmic behaviour, as well as the incandescence and avalanches of hot material that can occur during periods of heightened unrest.
Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park
The volcano is the centrepiece of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, a protected expanse of volcanic peaks, sand seas, and highland savanna in East Java. The park is one of Indonesia's premier natural attractions, drawing trekkers and photographers to its rugged caldera landscapes.
Semeru itself is a sacred mountain in Javanese and Hindu tradition, regarded as a cosmic axis and a destination for pilgrims as well as mountaineers.
Hazards and Monitoring
As a persistently active and closely watched volcano, Semeru is monitored continuously by Indonesia's volcanological authorities. Its principal hazards include pyroclastic flows and lahars — fast-moving mudflows of volcanic debris and water that can travel down the river valleys on its flanks, particularly during the rainy season.
This live feed offers a safe, real-time window onto a landscape that is both spectacular and continuously evolving.
