The Beach

Shirahama Ohama is the largest and most popular swimming beach on the Izu Peninsula, prized for its fine white sand and remarkably clear turquoise water. The gentle curve of the bay creates a broad, open shore that draws swimmers, families and surfers throughout the warmer months.

The Setting

A forested headland anchors the southern end of the cove, its dark green slopes meeting jagged volcanic rock at the waterline. Beyond the breakers, the silhouettes of the offshore Izu islands punctuate the open Pacific horizon, lending the view a sense of vast coastal space.

The Surf

Exposed to open-ocean swell, Shirahama Ohama is one of the region's favoured surf breaks. Steady sets roll in across the sandbar, and the beach hosts a lively community of board riders alongside casual bathers.

The Region

The beach lies on the southern coast of Shimoda, a historic port town in Shizuoka where Japan first opened to the outside world. Its mild maritime climate and scenic coastline make it a year-round destination on the Izu Peninsula.
