A window into the Shiretoko wilderness

This camera looks out over the lowland forest near the entrance to the Shiretoko Peninsula, a narrow finger of land jutting into the Sea of Okhotsk at the northeastern edge of Hokkaido. The understated scene — slender trunks, a tangle of undergrowth, and open forest floor — is classic Shiretoko, where human development gives way almost entirely to wild nature.

Wildlife of a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Shiretoko was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its exceptional ecosystem. The forest in view lies within the range of the Ussuri brown bear, one of the densest brown-bear populations on Earth, alongside Yezo sika deer, red foxes, and a wealth of woodland birds. Watch patiently and the forest floor may reveal its residents.

A boreal forest habitat

The vegetation is a mix of cool-temperate and boreal forest, with hardwoods rising above a thick layer of sasa bamboo grass typical of northern Japan. This layered habitat provides cover and forage for the animals the camera was set up to observe.

About the location

The camera sits within the municipality of Shari, in the Shari District of Hokkaido, close to the gateway facilities of Shiretoko National Park. It is one of Japan's most celebrated protected landscapes and a destination for travelers seeking genuine wilderness.
