What You'll See
This live camera looks out from the summit of Mauna Kea, Hawaii's highest peak at 4,207 metres, where the gleaming white dome of the Subaru Telescope and neighbouring world-class observatories rise above a vast sea of clouds. The thin, dry air and exceptional darkness make this one of the finest astronomical sites on Earth.
About the Subaru Telescope
Operated by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), the Subaru Telescope houses an 8.2-metre primary mirror, one of the largest single-piece mirrors ever built. From this ridge, astronomers study distant galaxies, exoplanets and the structure of the universe.
Stargazing & Meteor Showers
After dark the view becomes a window on the cosmos, capturing the Milky Way, planets and seasonal meteor showers over the Pacific. The altitude lifts the camera above much of the atmosphere, revealing the stars with remarkable clarity.
Viewing Experience
By day the silver domes stand sharp against a deep blue sky; by night they become silhouettes beneath a brilliant canopy of stars — a rare, around-the-clock look at where cutting-edge science meets raw volcanic landscape.
