A Rural Rail Corridor in the Paraíba Valley

The camera looks out over a stretch of single track cutting through the Paraíba do Sul valley, in the interior of Rio de Janeiro state. Rolling hills and open pasture rise on either side of the line, giving an unbroken view of trains as they approach and disappear around the bend near kilometer marker 177.

Freight on a Historic Line

This stretch of track forms part of one of Brazil's oldest rail corridors, threading the interior towns of the Paraíba do Sul valley long before the highways arrived. Today it carries a steady procession of freight trains, their long strings of hopper and container cars rumbling past the wooden sleepers and ballast.

Vieira Cortez and the Surrounding Countryside

The district of Vieira Cortez, part of the municipality of Paraíba do Sul, sits amid the hilly grasslands typical of this stretch of the Rio de Janeiro interior. A single tree and scattered utility poles are the only vertical breaks in an otherwise open, pastoral landscape that stretches to the hills on the horizon.

A Vantage Point for Railfans

With no buildings or platforms to obstruct the view, this fixed trackside camera offers a clean sightline for railfans tracking rolling stock along the route. The wide double curve visible in frame lets viewers watch trains approach from a distance before they pass directly in front of the lens.
