About Volcán de Fuego

Volcán de Fuego ("Volcano of Fire") rises to 3,763 meters (12,346 ft) on the border of Chimaltenango and Sacatepéquez departments in Guatemala. One of Central America's most active stratovolcanoes, it has been in a state of near-continuous eruption since 1999, producing frequent lava flows, Strombolian explosions, and periodic paroxysmal eruptions that send pyroclastic flows down its steep flanks.

What the Camera Shows

Positioned in Alotenango, this 4K live stream offers a direct view of Fuego's upper cone and active vents. During typical activity, streams of glowing incandescent lava trace bright orange paths down the dark volcanic slopes, while ash plumes and eruption columns billow skyward. During paroxysmal events, the full eruptive drama — lava fountains, pyroclastic cascades, and towering ash clouds — unfolds in real time.

Geological Context

Fuego sits within the Central American Volcanic Arc, formed by the subduction of the Cocos and Caribbean tectonic plates. Its neighbor Acatenango (3,976 m) shares a common volcanic complex; some geological evidence suggests the two were once a single edifice. The 2018 eruption (Erupción del 3 de junio) was one of the deadliest in Guatemala's history, underscoring the volcano's power and reach.

Observation and Monitoring

Fuego is continuously monitored by INSIVUMEH (Instituto Nacional de Sismología, Vulcanología, Meteorología e Hidrología de Guatemala) and the Smithsonian Institution's Global Volcanism Program. The volcano's frequent and photogenic activity makes it a key site for volcanological research, disaster-preparedness education, and public science outreach throughout Central America.
