A Sheltered Pacific Cove

Horseshoe Cove is a small, crescent-shaped inlet carved into the wild Sonoma Coast, where a sandy beach meets dark rock and rolling surf. Steep headlands shelter the cove and give it the distinctive horseshoe outline that lends the place its name.

The Bodega Marine Reserve

The cove sits within the Bodega Marine Reserve, a protected research preserve managed by the University of California, Davis. The surrounding bluffs, dunes and intertidal zones form one of the most studied coastal ecosystems on the West Coast.

Tide Pools and Marine Life

Exposed reefs and tide pools around the cove shelter anemones, sea stars, crabs and kelp. Offshore waters are part of a rich upwelling system that supports seabirds, seals and migrating whales along this stretch of the Pacific.
