A River That Bends West

This camera looks out along a broad westward curve of the Lena River, one of Siberia's great waterways, as it sweeps past the town of Lensk toward a low sandy spit on the near shore.

The paved riverside promenade runs along the foreground, part of the flood-defence embankment that protects the residential blocks just behind it. Streetlamps and railings line the walkway where residents come to watch the river.

Across the water, low forested ridges trace the horizon, part of the vast boreal taiga that dominates this stretch of the Sakha Republic — one of the most remote and sparsely populated regions on Earth.
