A Rare Raptor at the Nest

The Lesser Spotted Eagle (Clanga pomarina) is a migratory bird of prey that breeds across the forests of Northeastern Europe and winters in sub-Saharan Africa. This camera offers an intimate, eye-level window onto one Estonian pair, revealing behaviour rarely visible from the ground.

Forest Setting in Harju County

The nest is built into the upper canopy of mixed boreal woodland typical of Estonia, surrounded by birch, spruce and pine. The species favours managed economic forest fringed by protective zones, and a railway and village lie within reach of the breeding territory.

Breeding and Conservation

Viewers can follow the full breeding cycle — incubation, hatching and the slow feathering of the eaglets — as the parents bring small mammals, amphibians and reptiles to the platform. The project invites volunteers to record observations, and supports research into how the raptors respond to disturbance in their habitat.
