A Grassland Window into Majete

This camera looks out over an open grassland clearing ringed by scrubby bush and a solitary tree, deep inside Majete Wildlife Reserve in southern Malawi's Chikwawa District. It is one of several fixed cameras that PixCams has deployed across the reserve's remote corridors and clearings to track the movements of its resident wildlife.

Twenty Years of Reintroduction

Majete was stripped of its large mammals by poaching, but over two decades more than 3,000 animals spanning 17 species have been reintroduced, from elephant and black rhino to wild dog and giraffe. Repeated births among these founder populations point to a genuinely recovering ecosystem.

A Remote Engineering Feat

Streaming from this corner of Majete required custom infrastructure: each camera in the network runs on solar power with battery backup and transmits over satellite internet, since grid power and cellular coverage never reach this far into the bush. A cloud-managed encoder keeps the feed running with minimal on-site upkeep.

What to Watch For

Patience is rewarded at this grassland crossing: antelope, elephant, and Majete's other reintroduced residents drift in and out of frame as they move between the reserve's woodland and open plains. Every appearance is an unscripted glimpse into the daily rhythms of one of Malawi's great conservation success stories.
