A Historic Astronomical Vantage Point

The Giovanni Virginio Schiaparelli Observatory sits atop Campo dei Fiori, a forested peak overlooking the Lombard pre-Alps above Varese. Operated by the local astronomical society, the facility has combined scientific research with public outreach for decades, and this northward-facing camera is part of its wider network monitoring the surrounding sky and terrain.

A Sweeping Alpine Panorama

From roughly 1,226 meters, the view stretches across layered ridgelines and wooded valleys toward the higher peaks of the pre-Alpine chain. Forested slopes descend into the valley below, where small settlements are tucked among the hills beneath the distant summits.

Part of a Regional Nature Park

The observatory lies within the Campo dei Fiori Regional Park, a protected area known for its rich forests, hiking trails, and biodiversity. The mountain's summit and surrounding ridges offer some of the most expansive natural panoramas in the province of Varese.
