Shifen Waterfall Park
OnlineKnown as Taiwan's Niagara, Shifen Waterfall spills over a broad rock shelf on the upper Keelung River in Pingxi District. Its roughly 20-meter drop and 40-meter-wide curtain of falling water raise a constant mist. That mist often catches the light in a shimmering rainbow, earning the pool below the nickname "Rainbow Pond."

Taiwan's Widest Curtain Waterfall
Shifen Waterfall is famed as the widest waterfall in Taiwan, a broad curtain of water that fans out across a horseshoe-shaped rock ledge rather than plunging through a narrow gap. The shape mirrors the classic cuesta waterfall profile โ a gently sloping caprock undercut by erosion โ the same formation that shapes Niagara Falls, which is how the site earned its popular nickname.
Carved by the Keelung River
The falls sit on the upper reaches of the Keelung River inside Shifen Waterfall Park, part of the coal-mining-era Pingxi Branch Line corridor in New Taipei City. Layers of sedimentary rock, exposed over millennia by the river's flow, give the cliff face its distinctive tiered, terraced texture.
Mist, Rainbows and a Forested Amphitheater
Rising spray from the plunge pool drifts across the surrounding subtropical forest, and when sunlight cuts through the mist it frequently forms an arching rainbow over the pool, a signature sight that draws photographers to the viewing platforms and suspension bridge built along the riverbank.
Gateway to the Pingxi Crags
The park anchors a network of riverside trails linking several smaller cascades upstream and connects to the famed Pingxi Crags hiking route, making the waterfall both a scenic destination in its own right and the starting point for exploring the wider valley.
