Volyně Freedom Square

A Renaissance Square in South Bohemia

Freedom Square (náměstí Svobody) has been the civic heart of Volyně since the town's medieval founding, ringed by pastel townhouses with arcaded ground floors. This camera looks across the open plaza toward its cluster of historic landmarks.

The Renaissance Town Hall

Dominating the square is Volyně's Town Hall, rebuilt by Italian masons in the 16th century and ranked among the oldest in Bohemia. Its projecting arcaded façade carries sundials and sgraffito decoration, crowned by a slender tower topped with a double onion dome.

Plague Column and Fountain

A Baroque Marian plague column stands in the square's corner, while a restored historic fountain anchors the paved plaza opposite the town hall — two of the square's long-standing dominants.

Everyday Life on the Square

Cars park along the square's edges and pedestrians cross the open plaza beneath the spires of the nearby Church of All Saints, giving this small South Bohemian town square a steady thread of everyday local life.
