This camera looks directly into a purpose-built nest box occupied by a pair of common kestrels (Falco tinnunculus). The rust-brown plumage, dark barring and piercing eyes of these small falcons fill the frame, offering a rare, close-range view of behaviour rarely seen in the wild.

The Nest Box and Its Setting

Mounted on the eastern gable of a private home, the sturdy plywood box is lined with a thick bed of gravel. Beyond the entrance a sliver of open sky and greenery hints at the surrounding Franconian countryside along the banks of the Fränkische Rezat river.
