A Modern Perch Above the Port
Completed in 2023, Nagasaki's City Hall rises nearly 90 meters above the surrounding streets, and a permanently mounted camera on its rooftop surveys the harbor city spread out below. The vantage point takes in wide stretches of the urban grid, the curving waterline, and the green hills that ring the bay.
Megami Ohashi Bridge and the Harbor
Anchoring the horizon is the elegant Megami Ohashi Bridge, a cable-stayed span that connects the two sides of Nagasaki Harbor. Cruise ships and cargo vessels regularly glide beneath its towers, a reminder that this has been one of Japan's principal gateway ports for centuries.
Oura Church and the Historic Quarter
To one side of the frame, the twin spires of Oura Church, Japan's oldest surviving Christian church, mark the boundary of the city's historic foreign settlement. The surrounding slopes are dense with the narrow lanes and terraced houses that define old Nagasaki.
A City Between Mountains and Sea
Ringed by steep hills and opening onto a deep natural harbor, Nagasaki has long depended on its unique geography for trade, shipbuilding, and defense. From this rooftop vantage, the compact urban fabric squeezed between mountain and shoreline is laid out in full.
